Have you ever marveled at the beauty of an Ansel Adam or Edward Weston photograph and wondered how you could create that with your digital camera? Their approach of “straight photography” that uses sharp detail, contrast, and clear tonal values works just as well with digital as it does with analog.
This class will teach you the thought process and digital tools used to create the classic analog look using digital processing. Rich will show you the process he uses, that will allow you to make the finest quality expressions of photographs in black and white.
4 Session That Will Inspire You!
Session 1: Contrast
Monday, April 15, 5 PM, PT
Contrast is the key component of an expressive B&W photograph. Rich will teach you how to create and control contrast for maximum effect using Lightroom’s powerful curves too, and how to get around the Achilles heel built into Lightroom so you can produce more advanced results.
Session 2: Converting to B&W Like a Master
Monday, April 22, 5 PM, PT
Our cameras see in color, but we need to turn that information into black and white. How we do it is one of the most critical parts of the process, and Rich will show you how to convert from color to B&W with the eye of a master.
Session 3: Local Control – The Key to Expressive Results
Monday, April 29, 5 PM, PT
Effective local control with brushing and masking allows you to “dodge & burn” like a darkroom master. It allows fine tuning that makes the difference between a ho-hummer and a masterpiece. Learn how you can capture the viewer and guide the eye while creating a more expressive vision.
Session 4: The Proof is in the Print
Monday, May 6, 5 PM, PT
Prints are the ultimate way to share a B&W photograph, but the number of printing options can be overwhelming. I’ll give you a clear roadmap that will let you navigate the many choices of papers and printers to create the classic beauty you are looking for.
