The Right Exposure is the hallmark of a great photograph. Understand what is good exposure and how to achieve it
Online sessions will be recorded.
ONLINE DATES:
TBA
Instructor: Eileen Bowe
Nothing is more frustrating for a photographer than to see a perfectly composed image ruined by a poor exposure. Technique Exposure will help you avoid such results by improving your understanding of the principles of effective exposure, instructing you on the capabilities – and limitations – of your camera gear and providing you with strategies for not just capturing the “correct” exposure, but learning to use exposure as one more tool in your creativity toolbox.
We will begin with a review of basic exposure principles and terminology followed by a more detailed discussion of how light meters interpret the world they “see” through our lenses, and how shutter speed, aperture and ISO work together to control the amount of light you capture to make an image. In session 2 we turn our attention to understanding how to effectively expose light and dark subjects as well as high-contrast scenes. In session 3 we learn to use exposure as a creative tool by pre-visualizing the final image and then working through the steps required to make an exposure that conveys the desired mood. Finally, session 4 is a discussion of how effective exposure fits into the broader framework of creative image making and presentation.
The class will be taught online over 4 sessions. Each session will last approximately 2.5 hours.
Lesson 1: Managing Exposure
The class begins with a review of basic exposure principles and terminology followed by a discussion the tools (camera and meter settings, etc.) used to control exposure.
Lesson 2: Light & Dark – Getting it Right
Proper rendering of very light and dark elements is a critical exposure skill especially in high contrast scenes where the range of tonality is extreme. This session covers how to identify subjects and scenes that require special attention and how to expose them effectively.
Lesson 3: The Exposure Matrix
Creating a beautifully exposed image requires visualizing the final image and then working through the steps to create the exposure that conveys the desired mood of the image. In this session we will discuss a repeatable thought process for managing exposure decisions.
Lesson 4: Exposure with a Purpose
When all is said and done, exposure is the means to an end. Ultimately, our goal is to make a quality image that captures the viewer’s attention! The fourth session will be a discussion of all the steps required to make and present the best images possible.
