This workshop starts in Maun, Botswana and travels through four distinctly different ecosystems in and around the Okavango Delta. Unlike many Botswana tours, we’re targeting a special time of the year, just after the rains end, when the animals tend to be very active and water is plentiful everywhere. We first drive to a remote tented camp in the Moremi Reserve, where we use our Land Cruisers to explore the area for three days. Next, we boat to a luxury lodge deep in the delta wetlands, which we explore both on foot as well as by boat. We then take a quick chartered flight across the delta to an area where the water ends and the savannah begins: Savuti. This area is one of our best big predator locations, and we’ll almost certainly see lions on the hunt. Our mobile tented camp will have re-appeared in Savuti, and we’ll spend several days of exploration of the area. Finally, we’ll drive back to the land between the delta proper and the savannah, to an area with a permanent river, Khwai. Our mobile tented camp makes that move with us, and we’ll have three final days and nights to explore this area. When we’re done, we’ll drive you back to Maun in time for your flight home.

This itinerary has some of the most wide-ranging animal and bird populations you’ll find. In our last running of this workshop we photographed 163 bird species and virtually every mammal and reptile present.

We generally only put three students in each of our three vehicles, so there’s plenty of room for your gear. Every vehicle has a very experienced driver guide, and Thom will be in the front seat of one vehicle, while Mark Comon (Creative Photo Academy) will be in another. In other words, you’ll have top-level help both photographically as well as in spotting and identifying animals and birds throughout most of this workshop. We travel with laptops, projector and screen on this trip, so even in our downtime Thom and Mark are teaching pretty much every day. This isn’t a short workshop with a photo tour afterwards. It’s a full-on multi-week workshop.
